Beowulf

This year we're getting a hearty dose of British Literature in our home. Starting with this epic poem, we'll trek through the ages with Shelley, Austen, Shaw, Bronte, Joyce and Chaucer, to name a few.

This particular translation has the Old English and modern side by side for comparison. Because the beauty of this poem lies in the alliteration and rhythm rather than rhyme, it still works as an epic narrative tale.

Surprisingly, Mariah says she really likes the story. I find that I enjoy it much better than I did as a junior in High School. That may have been my friends' influence back then, or the availability of this celebrated translation now. Or both! Either way, I'm learning a ton more than I did last time.

I think Mariah is learning something too. At least I hope she is.
